There can be no more relishing a pilgrimage than a visit to Encores! At City Center. It's akin to visiting a museum where past treasures are revealed. The season opener is Girl Crazy, the 1930 tuner by the brothers Gershwin with a ravishing score that includes “I Got Rhythm,” “But Not for Me.” “Embraceable You," "Bidin' My Time," and "Could You Use Me?"
The fanciful musical follows a wealthy big city playboy to a ranch where he falls head over heels for a perky post-mistress. A quartet of gangly cowpokes lope across the stage singing “Bidin' My Time.” An ardent Chris Diamantpoulos courts his fancy with 'Embraceble You” and punctuates his ardent plea with “Could You Use Me?” Remember Judy and Mickey in the classic 1943 MGM film? A lusty Marc Kudisch is on hand to suggest rough sex with "Treat Me Rough." And then there is the triumph of " I Got Rhythm," the song that made Ethel Merman an overnight star. In this production, it's sung with great golden gusto by Ana Gasteyer.
A mere eight decades have slipped by... yet the glory of the Gershwins continues to illuminate the Broadway boards. Next up for Encores! the quint charm of Fanny. That'll be Feb 4-7.
