Brighton Beach Memoirs will close on Sunday November 1; Broadway Bound isn't

With a swiftness that's mind-boggling, the Broadway revival of Brighton Beach Memoirs will close on Sunday November 1, a week after it opened; the upcoming production of Broadway Bound, scheduled to start previews  on November 18 and  play in rep with Brighton Beach Memoirs, has been cancelled. Brighton Beach Memoirs will have played 9 performances and 25 previews.

In announcing the closing, producers Emanuel Azenberg and Ira Pittelman stated, " A lot of nice people on stage and off will be out of work and a lot of good partners and investors will have lost a great deal of money. They all deserve better. It makes us sad."  The Neil Simon PLAYS are produced by by Ira Pittelman, Max Cooper, Jeffrey Sine, Scott Delman, Ruth Hendel, Roy Furman, Ben Sprecher/Wendy Federman, Scott Landis and Emanuel Azenberg.

The production is directed by David Cromer and the cast includes Laurie Metcalf ( Kate Jerome), Dennis Boutsikaris ( Jack Jerome), Noah Robbins ( Eugene Morris Jerome), Santino Fontana ( Stanley Jerome), Jessica Hecht ( Blanche), Gracie Bea Lawrence ( Laurie) and Alexandra Socha ( Nora). Broadway Bound was to star Laurie Metcalf as Kate and  Dennis Boutsikaris as Jack, with Santino Fontana as Stanley, Jessica Hecht as Blanche, Josh Grisetti as Eugene Morris Jerome and Allan Miller as Ben.

Brighton Beach Memoirs opened to deceent reviews, but ticket sales never gathered steam. Writing for Theaternewsonline.com, our reviewer Joanne Kaufman said "that despite an attractive production, and a skillful, sympathetic director, Brighton Beach isn't particularly theatrical, certainly not very diverting or involving." The quick closing makes that point perfectly clear.
