EARTHA KITT DEAD AT 81

PURRFECT LADY
By ROGER B. HARRIS
Published December 26 2008

  Eartha Kitt

Legendary singer and stage star Eartha Kitt is dead at 81. The cause was colon cancer.

Kitt made her Broadway debut in the 1945 production of Carib Song. But it was in Leonard Sillman's New Faces of 1952 at the Royale, that she really made her mark.( Other notables in that cast included Paul Lynde, Robert Clary, Alice Ghostley and Ronnie Graham.) She later appeared in Shinbone Alley, Timbuktu and The Wild Party.

For many people, Kitt was first and foremost a singer. Her versions of "C'est Si Bon" and "Santa Baby" were world-wide sensations. And her television role in Batman was a purrfect hit.

Kitt also excelled as a cabaret and concert artist. She frequently held court at New York's Cafe Carlyle. And for her 80th birthday, she gave a concert at Carnegie Hall as part of the JVC Jazz Festival.

She leaves her daughter Kitt Shapiro.
