MARILYN COOPER DEAD AT 74

NO SAD SONGS
By THE THEATERNEWSONLINE STAFF
Published April 28 2009

Marilyn Cooper in 1996/Ph: Sara Krulwich

Marilyn Cooper, who won a Tony Award for her work in Woman of the Year, died in New Jersey last week after a long illness. She was 74.

Cooper appeared in many shows over a long career, including the original productions of West Side Story and Gypsy. She also was in Hallelujah Baby!, Two By Two, On The Town , Ballroom,&ampampnbspGrease and the female version of The Odd Couple. But she is probably best known for her role as Ruthie Rivkin in the 1962 Broadway musical I Can Get It For You Wholesale. Ostensibly the female lead opposite Elliott Gould's Harry Bogen, Cooper and the rest of the cast ( including Sheree North, Harold Lang and the imposing Lillian Ross) were overwhelmed by a force of nature who answered to the name Barbra Streisand.

Cooper also dabbled in television, guesting on Alice, The Nanny and Law and Order.
