Sony BMG Masterworks will issue the new Broadway cast recording of South Pacific on May 27.( The CD will be recorded on April 14). Lincoln Center Theater's production of the Rodgers and Hammerstein classic will open on April 3, at the Vivian Beaumont. Bartlett Sher directs.

The tuner stars Kelli O'Hara (Nellie Forbush), Paulo Szot (Emile deBecque), Matthew Morrison ( Joe Cable), Loretta Ables Sayre ( Bloody Mary) and Danny Burstein ( Luther Billis).

South Pacific is based on James Michener's Tales of the South Pacific. The music is by Richard Rodgers, lyrics by Oscar Hammerstein, 2nd, book by Oscar Hammerstein, 2nd and Joshua Logan. The new production has Ted Sperling conducting a 30-piece orchestra, using the original 1949 orchestrations by Robert Russell Bennett.

The original production opened on April 7, 1949, at the Majestic Theatre. It starred Mary Martin, Ezio Pinza, Juanita Hall, Myron McCormick and William Tabbert. The final curtain came down on January 16, 1954, after 1,925 performances.
