KRIEGER EXITS GEORGE STREET PLAYHOUSE
at George Street Playhouse, New Jersey

HELLO-I MUST BE GOING
By David Lefkowitz

  Mitchell Krieger

Four years after his hiring by artistic director David Saint, George Street Playhouse managing director Mitchell Kreiger has left the position at the New Jersey regional citing personal reasons.

In a press statement, George Street Board Chair George Wolansky  thanked Krieger for his "leadership and dedication" and said the venue had "grown in stature" during his tenure.

In his story about Krieger's exit, Newark Star Ledger critic Peter Filichia quotes Saint as saying Krieger "wasn't the right fit" for George Street. Still, Saint's official statement applauds Krieger's "love for the art itself." Saint adds that he'll work with the Board and a search committee to find a new managing director for the 33-year-old New Brunswick theater, which has 4,500 subscribers and an annual budget of $4 million.

Before George Street, Krieger served as artistic administrator for various opera companies, including Opera Pacific and Michigan Opera Theater. Ironically, Krieger leaves just as George Street is running the opera-based comedy, Souvenir, about Florence Foster Jenkins, the "Queen of the High C's" who merrily butchers arias - and thus becomes a legend. William Finn and James Lapine's musical, Falsettos, will then close out the season.
