CYD CHARISSE DEAD AT 86

DANCING IN THE DARK
By ROGER B. HARRIS
Published June 17 2008

  Cyd Charisse/PH: Charley Gallay

The long-legged beauty who came into the world as Tula Ellice Finklea, but found fame as Cyd Charisse, has died in Los Angeles of an apparent heart attack at age 86.

Charisse's major film roles included The Band Wagon, It's Always Fair Weather and the film adaptations of Silk Stockings and Brigadoon. In a small role in Singin' in the Rain, she electrified moviegoers and Gene Kelly, for that matter, with her screen presence. And who can forget the charge she put in Fred Astaire in the aforementioned Band Wagon. Yes, Ms. Finklea had IT, that certain something that drew audiences into her magnificent web.

Charisse is survived by her second husband, singer Tony Martin.
