CRY-BABY
at the Marquis

BLOOD, SWEAT AND TEARS
By ROGER B. HARRIS
Published June 18 2008

Harriet Harris in Cry-Baby/ph: Kevin Beme

In what was surely no surprise, Cry-Baby has announced it will give its last performance at the Marquis Theater on June 22. It will have played 68 regular performances and 45 previews.

The musical is based on John Waters same titled 1990 film. It's directed by Mark Brokaw and choreographed by Rob Ashford. It has a book by Mark O' Donnell and Thomas Meehan. The score is by David Javerbaum and Adam Schlesinger.

The current cast includes Harriet Harris, Chester Gregory II, Christopher Hanke, James Snyder, Alli Mauzey and Elizabeth Stanley.

Despite a plethora of bad reviews, the show received four Tony Award nominations, including Best Choreography, Best Musical, Best Score and Best Book. There were Drama League Commendations for Snyder, Harris and Mauzey. Ashford and dancer Spencer Liff received this year's Astaire Awards and Mauzey picked up a Theatre World Award.

Writing on theaternewsonline.com, our reviewer Jessica Branch called Cry-Baby a charming, if inconsequential trifle, which nevertheless had some of the season's most energetic dancing.

A national tour is planned for fall 2009.
