STARS FOR SOHO
at 101 Riverviews, New York

A VARIED GROUP
By David Lefkowitz
Published April 17 2007

Though their most recent full production ended in November, off-off-Broadway's Soho Rep has been busy making plans for its future shows, as well running its Development Workshops and Writer/Director Labs. That takes money, of course, so on May 14th, the theater will hold a benefit gala at swanky 101 Riverviews downtown near Grand Street.

Hosted by O Brother, Where Art Thou's Tim Blake Nelson, Soho Rep's Spring Gala `07 will begin with cocktails, follow with readings of play excerpts and conclude with a penthouse party. Big-namers expected to attend include Olympia Dukakis, Edward Albee, Buck Henry and En Garde Arts producer, Anne Hamburger.

Taking part in the play readings--by the likes of Mac Wellman (Crowbar), Will Eno (Thom Pain), Nick Flynn and Jenny Schwartz--will be such left-coasters as Matt Dillon(Crash), Lili Taylor( Six Feet Under), two-time Tony nominee Lois Smith (The Grapes of Wrath, Buried Child) and Joe Pantollano( a Sopranos Emmy winner and co-star of the 2003 Broadway mounting of Frankie and Johnny in the Claire de Lune).

The 70-seat Soho Rep (sohorep.org) is headed by Sarah Benson, who joined the company just last year. Previous artisitic director Daniel Aukin left after eight seasons to pursue freelance directing work. Among the dramatists produced by Soho Rep since its founding in 1974 are David Lindsay- Abaire, Anne Washburn and Len Jenkin.
