Published June 1 2007

  Rosie Perez

The Roundabout Theatre Company will offer a revival of Terrence McNally's The Ritz, at Studio 54, starting September 14-December 2. The opening's October 11.

The show will star Rosie Perez,Kevin Chamberlin and Brooks Ashmanskas and be directed by Joe Mantello. Sets will be by Scott Pask, costumes by William Ivey Long and lighting by Peggy Eisenhauer and Jules Fisher . Additional cast members and the rest of the design team will be announced in the near future.

A laugh out loud comedy, the show is set in a gay bathhouse in Manhattan. One, Gaetano Proclo (Chamberlin), hides out there from a mobster, blissfully unaware, at first, of the true nature of the place. Ms. Perez plays the entertainer Googie Gomez. Mr. Ashmanskas plays Chris( the role played in the original production by F. Murray Abraham.)

That original production opened at the Longacre Theatre on January 20, 1975. It starred Jack Weston and Rita Moreno as Proclo and Gomez. Also in the cast were Jerry Stiller and Stephen Collins. The show was directed by Robert Drivas. The Ritz closed on January 4, 1976, after 398 performances.
