By ROGER B. HARRIS
Published August 7 2008

  Simon Gray

British playwright Simon Gray, author of such acclaimed plays as Butley, Otherwise Engaged and The Common Pursuit, has died at 71. He had been suffering from lung cancer.

Other plays of Gray included Quartermaine's Terms, Melons, Wise Child, The Rear Column and The Holy Terror. He also published a series of diaries, five novels, several screenplays and teleplays.

Probably his best known work was Butley, about an English professor, who manages to lose both his his wife and male protege within the same 24 hours. English star Alan Bates was especially identified with the role, originating it in on stage in London, and then appearing in the 1974 Harold Pinter film version of it. When it was revived on Broadway in 1976, Nathan Lane played the title role.
