63RD ANNUAL THEATRE WORLD AWARDS ANNOUNCED

A GOOD START

Winners of the 63rd annual Theatre World Awards for Outstanding Broadway or Off-Broadway Debut performances during the 2006-2007 theatrical season have been announced. The award ceremony will take place at New World Stages on Tuesday, June 5. The event will be hosted by Peter Filichia.

The winners are Fantasia Barrino( The Color Purple), Eve Best( A Moon for the Misbegotten), Mary Birdsong( Martin Short:Fame Becomes Me), Erin Davie( Grey Gardens), Xanthe Elbrick( Coram Boy), Johnny Galecki( The Little Dog Laughed), Jonathan Groff( Spring Awakening), Gavin Lee( Mary Poppins), Lin-Manuel Miranda( In the Heights), Bill Nighy (The Vertical Hour), Stark Sands( Journey's End) and Nilaja Sun( No Child).

Theatre World's first issue, edited by Daniel Blum, covered the 1944-45 theatrical season. In the beginning, the publication had what it called "A Gallery of Exclusive Portraits of Promising Personalities." The first group to be honored, were Bambi Lynn, Margaret Phillips, John Raitt, Judy Holliday, Richard Davis, Richard Hart, Betty Comden, Donald Murphy, Charles Lang, John Lund .and Nancy Noland. For lovers of theatre trivia, the fine actress Laurette Taylor was the first Cover Girl.
