at the Lyric Hammersmith

Published January 26 2009

  Aneurin Barnard

It has been announced that the London and European premiere of Spring Awakening has been extended by two weeks even before the first preview has seen the light of day.

The multi Tony-winning show was originally scheduled to finish its run on Feb, 28 but is now taking bookings until March 14.

Michael Mayer's newly cast production, which features a Grammy Award-winning score by composer Duncan Sheik and lyricist Steven Slater, officially opens at West London's Lyric, Hammersmith theatre on Feb. 3.

Royal Shakespeare Company regulars Sian Thomas and Richard Cordery play the adult roles. Mayer spent a year searching for the parts of the adolescents who are played by a young British and Irish cast, many of whom are making their stage debuts.

Mayer told TNO that the Lyric Hammersmith, whose Victorian theatre is encased within a modern building, is the prefect setting for a show which is based on Frank Wedekind's 1891 play yet features a contemporary rock score.
