London's Almeida theatre has announced an autumn and winter program that includes the U.K. premiere of Sam Shepard's latest play Kicking A Dead Horse. Directed by the author, the Abbey Theatre, Dublin production stars Irish actor Stephen Rea and arrives at the Almeida for just 16 performances from Sept. 5 following a run at New York's Public Theatre. Shepard's play concerns a wealthy Manhattan art dealer who has ditched his life in the city in search of authenticity in the modern-day wild west. Actor and playwright Shepard has written over 45 plays- including Simpatico, True West, Fool For Love, and A Lie of the Mind-eleven of which have won Obie Awards. Other awards include the Pulitzer Prize for Buried Child. Shepard's film appearances include The Right Stuff for which he received an Oscar nomination and more recently The Accidental Husband and The Assassination of Jesse James. Rea was most recently seen on the London stage in Harold Pinter's Celebration marking the playwright's 75th birthday.Film credits include The Crying Game for which Rea received an Oscar nomination. The Almeida's season continues with a revival of Harley Granville Barker's political play Waste ( Sept. 15-Nov. 25) to be directed by Samuel West.
