FIDDLER ON THE ROOF
at the Savoy Theatre, London

SETTING DOWN ROOTS
By Roger B. Harris

Henry Goodman in Fiddler on the Roof

Ticket sources have confirmed to theaternewsonline.com that the Sheffield Crucible production of Fiddler on the Roof will be settling down at the Savoy Theatre, come May 19, with an official opening scheduled for May 29. The show will star Henry Goodman, as the irrepressible Tevye. Goldie will be played by Beverley Klein. It's directed by Lindsay Posner.

The show, originally opened on Broadway on September 22, 1964, at the Imperial Theatre. It starred Zero Mostel as Tevye, Maria Karnilova as Goldie and Bea Arthur as Yente(the matchmaker). Others in the cast included Austin Pendleton, Bert Convy, Leonard Frey and Julia Migenes. The show went on to play 3,242 performances, before it closed(for the first time) on July 2, 1972.

Fiddler on the Roof, with words and music by Sheldon Harnick and Jerry Bock, and a book by Joseph Stein, will feature a new working of Bock's score by violinist Sophie Solomon.

Mr. Goodman, one of Britain's most renowned actors, is justly famous for his mesmerizing performance as Shylock in the National Theatre's 1999 production of The Merchant of Venice. Showing the depth of his talent, he also played Billy Flynn in the musical Chicago. Most recently, he appeared in the English National Opera's production of Gilbert and Sullivan's The Gondoliers.

Unfortunately, many people remember Goodman, for his short-lived run as Max Bialystock in the New York production of The Producers. He was fired by Mel Brooks just days before the critics were to review his performance.

Mr. Posner's production of Fiddler opened at the Crucible Theatre , on December 5, 2006.
