HAROLD PINTER DEAD AT 78

  Harold Pinter

Celebrated author Sir Harold Pinter has died after a long and valiant battle with cancer, the Associated Press has reported. The winner of the 2005 Nobel Prize for Literature was 78.

Pinter wrote 32 plays. They included The Homecoming, for which he won a Tony Award for Best Play, Betrayal, The Birthday Party, The Caretaker, No Man's Land, Old Times, Mountain Language, A Kind of Alaska, One for the Road and Celebration. He also authored 22 screen plays, including The Quiller Memorandum, The French Lieutenant's Woman, Betrayal, The Last Tycoon, The Servant and The Go-Between. He wrote one novel, Dwarfs. An accomplished actor, he was an outstanding interpretor of his own work, appearing in productions of The Birthday Party and No Man's Land, among others.

Harold Pinter leaves his second wife, Lady Antonio Fraser, and a son, Daniel, from his prior marriage to Vivien Merchant.
