COLLABORATION/TAKING SIDES
at the Duchess

MORAL VISIONS
By JOHN NATHAN
Published February 19 2009

The double bill of Ronald Harwood plays which TNO revealed are to transfer from Chichester Festival Theatre to London, will arrive at the West End's Duchess Theatre on May 20. Taking Sides which premiered at Chichester's Minerva Theatre in 1995, was paired last year at the same theater with Harwood's latest play Collaboration.

Each work reassess the moral choices made by two giants of German culture during Hitler's rule &ndash in Taking Sides, the conductor Wilhelm Furtwangler, and in Collaboration, composer Richard Strauss, both played by Michael Pennington. Pennington is supported in Philip Frank's productions by David Horovitch who takes on the roles of Furtwangler's philistinic American interrogator Major Arnold and Strauss's Jewish librettist Stefan Zweig.

Best known for his play and Oscar-nominated film The Dresser, Harwood has often written about the moral choices made by musicians. In 2003 he won an Oscar for his screenplay for the The Pianist, and last received his third Oscar nomination for The Diving Bell and the Butterfly.
