at the Garrick

Published February 20 2009

Trevor Nunn's Menier Chocolate Factory production of A Little Night Music is to transfer to the West End's Garrick Theatre.

The revival of Stephen Sondheim's musical, which features a book by Hugh Wheeler based on Ingmar Bergman's Smiles of a Summer Night , represents something of a come-back for director Nunn whose previous production, the world premier of Gone With the Wind, was one of the biggest flops in the West End last year. A Little Night Music opened at the tiny Southwark powerhouse last December and begins West End performances on March 28. The show is booking until July 25, 2009.

The transfer keeps the production's principle cast of Hannah Waddingham(previously Spamalot's lake Lady) as fading actress Desiree, Maureen Lipman as her mother Madame Armfeldt , Alex Hanson as Desiree's lover Fredrik, and Jessie Buckley as Fredrik's adolescent wife.

The Menier-to-West End transfer will be the seventh since the venue opened in 2004 under the artistic direction of David Babanii. Previous hits include the multi Olivier-winning revival of Sondheim's Sunday in the Park With George.
