  Scene from War Horse

For two consecutive years, the National's production of War Horse has had sold-out runs at its Olivier Theatre. Acknowledging the show's popularity, this year when the production finishes up at the Olivier on March 18, 2009, it will move over to the West End's New London Theatre, starting previews on March 28, with an opening set for April 3.

The production, based on the Michael Morpurgo novel which has been adapted by Nick Stafford, first played the National from October 2007 thru mid-February 2008. For its second season, it opened, again, at the Olivier, in September of this year, playing through to the above mentioned March 18.

The production is directed by Marianne Elliott and Tom Morris. It's presented in association with Handspring Puppet Company. It's designed by Rae Smith lighting by Paule Constable, movement and horse choreography by Toby Sedgwick, puppet design and fabrication by Adrian Kohler, the puppetry directors are Basil Jones and Adrian Kohler video design by Leo Warner and Mark Grimmer, songs by John Tams, music by Adrian Sutton and sound by Christopher Shutt.

Writing in London Theatre News, reviewer Edwin Wilson called War Horse "An amalgam of three theatrical elements: an appealing children's story...a vivid often frightening depiction of the carnage of World War I, and the puppet wizardry of a group called the Handspring Puppet Company. Sometimes the mixture works well- at other times, the parts appear very much at odds with one another."
