DANCE AND MUSIC
at the Young Vic

FOR THE FIRST TIME
By JOHN NATHAN
Published January 11 2009

London's Young Vic has announced that its 2009 season will include the venue's first foray into dance theatre with a Daniel Kramer -directed show based on Mussorgsky's piano suite Pictures at an Exhibition.

The season also features Been So Long, a new musical by actor/director Che Walker set to a soul, reggae, funk and blues score by Arthur Darvill.

Darvill wrote the music for Walker's The Frontline, the first modern play to be staged at the Shakespeare's Globe Theatre. As with that work, Been So Long delves into love stories located in London's urban underbelly.

The musical runs from June 11 to July 11, while Kramer's production of Pictures at an Exhibition, which features a text by poet James Fenton and choreography by Frauke Requardt, opens on May 8 and runs for just over two weeks.

The Young Vic season also features Kursk by the innovative theatre company Sound&Fury and writer Bryony Lavery. Based on the tragic submarine disaster of 2000 in which 118 sailors died, the show will attempt an "immersive theatrical experience&rdquo that evokes life in a military submarine. Performances begin June 3.
