QUADROPHENIA
at Theatre Royal (Plymouth)

FINAL STAGE
By JOHN NATHAN
Published February 18 2009

The Who's Quadrophenia is to become a stage musical thirty years after the rock album was made into a movie.

Directed by Tom Critchley , the musical will feature a young British company assembled by casting director Pippa Ailion who assembled the cast for another rock musical, the London production of Spring Awakening.

The show will open at Plymouth's Theatre Royal in May before embarking on a 6-month national tour.

The album Quadrophenia was released by The Who in 1973. Then came the iconic film in 1979. Rolling Stone magazine and VH1 have named it one of the 100 greatest albums of all time. The film starred Sting, Phil Daniels, Leslie Ash, Toyah Wilcox and a young Ray Winstone. It captured the tense and at times violent atmosphere in the UK in the mid 1960s.

Peter Dennis Blandford Townsend - better known as Pete Townsend - was the song-writing creative force behind The Who and the composer of the rock opera Tommy. A new generation was introduced to the The Who's music when the track "Who Are You&rdquo was used as the theme tune for the hit crime series CSI.
