at The London Palladium

Published April 29 2007

Handling the problem called Maria, has now fallen to Margaret Preece, who has assumed the role of Mother Abbess in The Sound of Music, playing at the London Palladium. An original cast member as Sister Sophia since the show opened on November 15 of last year, she replaces Lesley Garrett in the role.

Over the years, Preece has played major roles with the Scottish Opera, Opera North, and the English National Opera. She's also appeared in The Bacchae at the National and The Phantom of the Opera at Her Majesty's Theatre. In the film version of The Phantom of the Opera, she dubbed the singing voice of Carlotta, for Minnie Driver.

The Sound of Music stars Connie Fisher as Maria for six performances a week; Aoife Mulholland plays the part on Monday evenings and Wednesday matinees. The stalwart Captain Von Trapp is played by Alexander Hanson. The show is directed by Jeremy Sams.
