MAYER AND HOGGETT TEAMING UP
at TBA

A NEW AWAKENING
By JOHN NATHAN
Published January 12 2009

Theaternews On Line has learned that American Tony-winning director Michael Mayer is collaborating with English choreographer Steven Hoggett on a musical which is intended to open this year. TNO understands that the show is intended to open on the West Coast in the Summer.

Mayer is currently rehearsing the European premiere of Spring Awakening, the hit musical inspired by Frank Wedekind's 1891 play of the same name.

The London production opens at the Lyric, Hammersmith on Feb. 3 following previews from Jan. 23. "It's an opera from an established piece of music," confirmed Mayer.

"It's an unconventional musical in that its based on music that was not written for the theatre. I'm enhancing the narrative that is inherent in the work&rdquo, said Mayer. "And I'm very excited collaborating with Steven," added the director.

Hoggett is co-Artistic Director of Frantic Assembly and the choreographer and movement director of Black Watch.

Meanwhile, Mayer's British-cast London production of Spring Awakening opens just after his multi Tony-winning Broadway production finishes its two-year run on Jan. 18.
