CHICKEN SOUP WITH BARLEY
at the Royal Court

ADDED FLAVOR

Theatre News Online has learned that Royal Court artistic director Dominic Cooke is considering staging Sir Arnold Wesker's Chicken Soup with Barley in 2010.

The play is the first of what became known as the Wesker Trilogy which includes Roots and I'm Talking About Jerusalem. In 1958 Chicken Soup with Barley launched its author and his characters, the Communist Jewish Kahn family of London's East End, into the vanguard of Britain's Theatrical revolution led by John Osborne's Look Back in Anger.

When TNO spoke to Wesker, he said that Samantha Spiro, currently appearing as Maria with Sir Derek Jacob's Malvolio in the Donmar West End production of Twelfth Night, is in line for the matriarchal role of Sarah Kahn.

If the production goes ahead, this will be Spiro's second Wesker play. In her first she played Beattie in an Oxford Stage Company production of Wesker's Roots ten years ago.

"Roots was a lovely production and I remember thinking, 'When I'm much, much older, when I'm really, really old, I wouldn't mind playing Sarah in Chicken Soup with Barley,' Spiro told TNO. "I can't believe how quickly it's come.&amprdquo
